Mal has gone through so many hair colors and styles that Evie isn't even going to blink at the changes. That's what people do; they change and adapt. They become different versions of themselves, much like the kids from the Isle have. Especially herself and Mal and the boys. They'd all learned that they didn't have to be their parents, nor who their parents told them to be.
So it doesn't take long for Evie to recognize Mal. Hardly a second. It's the muttering that has her concerned, and she's wondering if this Mal is from either a different dimension altogether, or from earlier in her own timeline.
"Mal, are you alright?" Never mind the fact that Evie's just spent several months on a train traveling the void. Her first concern isn't the fact that she hasn't seen Mal in that time. It's that Mal is upset.
