TEST DRIVE #4

♦ SETTING: HAVEN
♢ THE TEST DRIVE

With all of this said, welcome to Test Drive #4! This is our fourth and latest setting to Fluxscape. Styled as a desert world in ruins, there is some mystery as to why this world is the state it is in.

Should you find yourself interested in joining FluxScape, please feel free to put a Reserve in. And our Applications are always open, approved every Sunday.

Thank you for considering FluxScape!

♢ THIS TOWN HAS TEETH

Your journey starts out differently this time. No blinking and you're suddenly outside of Jerry's information booth. In fact, you're going to wake up on a train. A rusty, dirty and crowded train and it's a voice that wakes you up. Crackling loudly from speakers above, the voice has a slight accent, and a gravely tone to it and what it says is:

"Haven Train Station. Last stop. Everyone off!"

With that, the train grinds to a rough halt and the people around you start rising, jostling with each other to leave the train as soon as the doors open. What it opens up to is a town in the middle of a dessert. It's dirty, hot and the whole place looks like it was put together in a rush. Most exteriors seem to be slapped together out of metal. Rusted and creaking, looking like a good, strong wind would knock it over. It's not meant to look pretty. If anything, it looks as though the people in this town slapped it together for survival, and nothing more.

♢ INSIDE HAVEN

Most of the town resides under broken overpasses, and most of the businesses sit in old tunnels, lit with kerosene lamps. They're crowded, the people are rude, and some of them might even try to pick your pockets, so be wary. The residents have been through hell and to them, you're just more strangers they're unsure of.

The Metroplex and Wechester Tower still sits in the middle of town, looking more like several buildings pieced together, and less like the illustrious buildings they once were. The outdoor market is still there, but the food isn't quite as fresh and while you can now haggle for prices, be ready for an argument. The people of Haven have had it really rough and they really aren't about to put up with strangers making things worse.

And most if not all of the restaurants in town seem to be reduced in size. There's not much in the way of seating, and most places seem to serve some variety of hearty noodle dish, flavored with various herbs and spices, pieces of cooked meat and vegetables really giving these dishes an exceptionally filling quality. These people don't have much, but what they do have, they know how to use well.

Even Starkbucks has been reduced to a smaller establishment, very obviously built in a shipping container, with emphasis on roasting their own coffee beans behind the building and serving up coffee, hot tea and the occasional pastry when the bakery has any to spare. You won't find any of the fancier drinks, because ingredients for that aren't too common to find, but the coffee is actually good and the smell of roasting beans seems to go for blocks.

The local teenagers also have their own place to go and hang. It's just beyond the decrepit school building, a part of an old mall that's clearly been empty for years. They call it The Caldera. There's a parking garage that's caved in and been turned into a skate-park, and just beside it is The Caldera Skate Shop. Everything there is covered in graffiti, no one seems to give a shit.

Haven runs on Solar Power. There are solar panels everywhere, but sometimes they don't work quite as well as they should, so there are random power outages that happen throughout the day. Maybe one of the feral creatures that run through Haven chewed on a wire? A rat, or something? Give it a moment; it'll come back on eventually. This happens often and the NPCs seem to shrug it off.

If you're worried about water, it's surprisingly plentiful and clean. If you're outside and want water, you'll have to find one of the many hand-pumps around town to get some. It takes a while, and usually draws a crowd, so be willing to step back and share. Living under two suns isn't all that easy for anyone. But, at least no one suffers from sunburn or sunstroke. Why that is, no one can say. But be ready to walk around with a good tan. For a town stuffed into a rough part of the desert, Haven is colorful, even with all the rust. That much, at the very least, seems important to people. They've decorated the walls with paintings and drawings, even their hair and clothes seem to have a vibrancy that defies the tan and brown landscape around them. A lot of it clashes, but that's fine. Haven might not be pretty, but it's home to many.

♢ OUTSIDE HAVEN: THE LOCAL WILD LIFE AND TROUBLE THEY CAUSE

You can leave the walls of Haven. No one's going to stop you. And you can get pretty far, too, but be careful. The creatures outside of the walls are out to get you. They come in all shapes and sizes and are as mean as they come.

SKITTERS: A crablike ant who ranges in size from a Pomeranian to a Clydesdale, whose hide is tough and who can breathe fire and burrow through the hard dirt within seconds. Very hard to kill. Their hills can be found all over the Outerlands and, if disturbed, tend to swarm whatever they deem a threat.

DEVIL DOGS: Hairless, quadrupedal beasts with bifurcated faces who attack in packs and can cough up corrosive ick. They range in size from German Shepherd puppies to full grown Mastiffs. The much smaller ones tend to be more curious than anything else, and some in Haven have adopted one or two, but be careful trying this on your own. They're hard to train and tend to chew on everything. Not as hard to kill as the Skitters, but they move fast and tend to weave instead of run in a straight line.

KITES: These aren't the fun, colorful things you see children flying in the air on a good, windy day. These things are mean. Leathery, hideous, one clawed foot they use to grasp onto things and hang from, they're a batlike creature whose screech can hurt if done too close, and who have very sharp projectiles they throw at targets from their tail. They're accurate, and they hurt like hell.

These things are barely good eating, and not worth the risk of killing, so it's a good thing the people of Haven get daily shipments of stuff from somewhere. They won't tell you where, just change the subject and walk off.

Should you venture out, please try to be armed. It seems as if everyone in this town has a gun of some kind on them, so it might be wise to get one. Or, if you're lucky, find an okay one in the desert in a pile of trash, along with ammunition. It's few and far between, however, so use your ammunition sparingly.

♢ BEYOND THE OUTERLANDS

Beyond the Outerlands, quite a long distance from Haven, in fact, is a foggy zone. Step into it if you want, but you'll just end up right outside of Jerry's info booth.

♢ MECHANICS

TRAVEL: As stated, you can leave Haven and explore. It's best to do it with wheels. It seems as though whatever force is changing the setting so often thinks it best people have wheels of their own, but not a single vehicle is designed for visual appeal. They're tough. Probably even outfitted with weaponry. Some have the capability to hover, and all vehicles seem able to repair themselves if they take too much damage. Which will happen if you take them out of Haven.

If, however, they do get damaged beyond repair, fret not. They'll appear back at home, waiting for you to ride again.

DEATH: Let's be real. This place can and will kill you, if you're not smart. Don't worry. If you do die, you'll revive at one of the VitaPoints inside and outside of Haven. And not a single resident will blink. You might even witness an NPC going through that very experience, reappearing in a flash of color and static before sighing and walking off. How it works, no one can say, but you'll come back with all of the stuff you were carrying and not a scratch will be on you.

GRAVITY: You're not on Earth, or any planet that has gravity like it. Gravity on Haven doesn't quite have that same pull. You won't float off, and everything looks like it's staying firmly on the ground, but a good jump might send you higher than you're used to. Please be careful, you can still get hurt if you don't land just right.

With all this said, it's important to note that this setting and the changes it brings about will run a lot further than has happened before. Right down to a persons wardrobe. There's no reason to look fancy in Haven. There's no call for it whatsoever. Everyone will find that their clothing has become less for appearance and more for durability. Wear and tear is a very common thing in Haven, so your clothes will change to match. Oh, there'll still be elements common to your characters, no one loses that. But to survive the heat, and the violence, and Haven in general, your clothes are now meant to protect you. Should you venture out and die, you'll find yourself reviving at one of the VitaPoints around town. You won't find your body, it'll vanish before you hit the ground, but you'll be alive again!

THE SKY: We should point out that, for starters, Haven has two suns. One of them just slightly closer than the other. This means Haven is very hot, and the sky rarely has clouds in it. Once the first sun, (a bright blue-white star that's a fair distance away but still visible and close enough to heat the surface of the planet) sets, the air starts cooling off. When the red sun goes down, it's practically perfect hoodie weather and feels delightful as compared to the daytime. And if you look up, you'll note that Haven has no moon. Is there a reason for that? Probably. Or maybe this planet just has no moons. Whatever the case, the night sky is a deep purple, almost black, and the stars are plentiful. There's also a lovely natural phenomena that happens at night, but just a touch more on that later.

♢ NPCS AND YOU

The most important thing to be aware of is the NPCs of Haven will not trust or like your characters at first. You're strangers. There's talk they've had trouble with strangers. There will be opportunities to build up faith and trust, but don't expect it to happen so quickly.

Expect resistance from everyone. In fact, expect NPCs to try to pick your characters pockets or start fights. Or just generally be antagonistic and rude. This town has been through Hell and for all the NPCs know, you're here to bring more trouble than you're worth .

Haven is rough, and dirty. Hot, and at times very intense, but wait until the two suns go down. Haven doesn't have a moon, but that's fine, because night-time has it's own radiance. That's when the sky lights up with a lovely Aurora Borealis that glows throughout the evening, from Suns-down to Suns-up and it's loved by all residents. You can be sure that a lot of them will find places to sit and watch for a bit, watching the colors dance across the sky, enjoying the cooler night air. At night, it's peaceful. So enjoy it.

Is it another CR with me meme? Yes, yes it is. Our list of players and characters has exploded and even with the plot going on, we're still going to need to go and make friends. Right?

Not to mention, people have new coworkers and housemates. It's probably best to get to know them a little bit.

So just fill out the form below and post it for each of your characters. Enjoy. Have fun. Make some friends. Plot some things.

And for all you Newbies? Welcome to the game. We're glad to have you.

The last time we did this, it was plot relevant. This time, we're just doing this for the sake of getting some CR started.

So we have a handy, dandy form to fill out! Fill it out, post it below. Comment around to drum up some handwaved CR and even some future CR, too!

Welcome to Driftcrest Ski Resort and Village.

This place has it all, for a ski resort. There's skiing, obviously. You can also go snowtubing, ice skating at the large pond in the center of town. Restaurants, stores and entertainment of all kinds exist in the large mall near the center of town.

The main hotel/resort part of this place now houses not only tons of hotel rooms that are open for residents and Flux-Ins alike should they need a small vacation, but this is now where you'll find The Surf Board. It'll still have surfing, just indoors and in a huge waterpark setting. The waterpark isn't just for hotel guests. Anyone can come in to use it.

The only place in town people seem to want to avoid, or seem saddened by, is an acre of land dedicated to highly detailed ice sculptures of various people. No one familiar, but residents seem to treat this place as a sort of memorial, and the sculptures all have small placards with names on them underneath the words "In Loving Memory."

There's just...something odd about Driftcrest. During the day, while the sun is out and the town is active, people seem happy. Overjoyed to be out in the sun, glad to wake up. Everyone is kind, friendly, people are always pleased to see each other, always so excited to see people they know.

But at around 7:25, when the sun starts going down, people tense up and suddenly seem to be in a hurry. Shops start to close at 7 PM and everyone rushes to be inside at 8, locked away behind closed doors, behind curtains that are designed to keep the light from shining out through the window.

And everyone advises you to be inside and stay inside after eight, whether you're home or not.

Another odd thing or two to note: Driftcrest seems to be built inside a fort, with everything existing right in the middle. And it's not a fort designed to keep people in. After a while, people might start noticing that it's designed to keep something out. There are guards that patrol the walls of the fort. Armed, sure, but while the place feels modern, these guys are armed with incendiary weaponry. Arrows that can be lit on fire, napalm grenades. Nothing too major, but certainly something designed to set something on fire.

While there is no curfew in town, guards will advise people to head back home and stay inside, should they be caught wandering around after eight PM. Whether you do that or not is up to you. But be warned: staying out past curfew and you might hear the unsettling sounds of something skittering in the dark. You might even start feeling a tiny bit stalked. So it's probably best to get inside quick and no, you won't see what it is, no matter how hard you look.

[ ooc: as the problem with this setting hasn't been set in game yet, we thought it best to avoid spoilers until then. so while you will be stalked and feel as though you're being hunted, you won't see what and eventually, it'll leave you alone. ]

This meme is plot-relevant. Specifically, the Alternately plot. The same rules apply as before; your character (The AU one being brought in for this plot) has been in town for a while, now (meaning since the day you brought in the Original Flavor) character. They've had time to meet people. Make friends. Make enemies. Make some kind of a name for themselves, even!

Who are they? What have they been up to? What's different from their Original Flavor selves in terms of routines and habits?

Fill out the form below and drum up some Alternate cr!

Please note, again, that this is just for the plot. Once things go back to normal, your characters can keep the memories of being their alternate selves and the lives they had if you want, so this is just a really good way to make a few old/new friendships, right?

You know how it goes. One minute, you're in your own world. You're minding your own business. Going about your day, or maybe you're in the middle of something very, very important. Whatever the case, whether you blinked or you turned around or what have you, you're not where you were before. The first thing you might notice are the sounds around you. It's loud. Crowded. Horns honk and people shout and there's just the constant buzz of activity around you as people play and walk through and hang out in the massive park you find yourself in.

You're in a city. A large, bustling city full of people and all the chaos cities bring.

And somehow, over the din and aggressive noise pollution, you hear someone call your name.

There's an information booth nearby, with a man seated inside, watching you with vague but warm interest over the rim of his newspaper. Motioning you over, he has a packet of information for you and as he does so, he states simply;

"Check your pockets." Unless you're wearing something that doesn't have pockets, in which case, the man will tell you to check the ribbon hanging around your neck. At the end of it is a key. Maybe it's strange to you, and it'll unlock one of the apartments in the buildings nearby. Or maybe it's familiar, and you'll find a shell of your home on the outskirts of the city.

"It would be in your best interest," the man says as he points out the packet of information and hands you an envelope full of money that seem to shift colors very subtly. "If you read all of the information I just gave you."

And he's right. It has where you'll live, where to find jobs, and information on the cellphone he hands you.

With that, he simply gives you a small nod and a smile that clearly say it's time for you to move on and he resumes reading his paper.

Welcome to Wechester City.

AND WITH THAT! Welcome to our third TDM. We're excited to have you here. Here you'll find a listing of a lot of locations found in Wechester City, so please feel free to use any of them as a starter!

Thank you for considering FluxScape!

Late Night at Denny's.

Listen, it happens to the best of us. It's three AM and suddenly you want pancakes, but you don't want to cook it for yourself. So, whether you grab friends or not, you head to Denny's to handle that late night craving.

And that's exactly what this meme is. Hanging out with or randomly running into friends at Denny's.

At well-past anyone's bedtime. So there's probably some overly-tired silliness. Or maybe it's time for serious chats. Who knows? Who cares? It's Denny's. The food is good, the coffee is questionable, and there's probably a semi-rowdy drunk crowd in there, but other than that?

It's probably going to be a good time for all.

Tag in with a starter, or a blank comment. Tag around. Have fun.

At this time, people have been in Beachville for a month or so, give or take. And since Beachville isn't all that big, being a beach town and all, it's very likely people have met off of the network and face to face. And while threading out interactions is fun, there's been a lot going on both IRL and somewhat in game where not every single meeting and interaction can be planned out.

That's where this lovely meme comes in.

Just fill out the handy dandy notebook form below and paste it as a top level below! You can also feel free to tag others and suggest possible interactions between your character and theirs.

And possibly plot attempts to figure out how to leave or where the hell the garbage trucks go. Or why suddenly shops aren't changing locations.

Upon Arrival:

You know how it goes. One minute you're minding your own business. Maybe you're in your own universe, maybe you're in another one entirely. Whichever the case, you blink and suddenly you find yourself in front of a small, wooden information booth, without so much as a warning. The weather is lovely, the environment peaceful, until someone clears their throat nearby to get your attention. It's coming from the booth. Inside the booth sits an older gentleman, old enough to be your grandfather, and he's smiling warmly at you.

"Welcome," he says, giving you a grin and a small nod. He means no harm and regards you with some curiosity before reaching towards a stack of very plain looking pamphlets in front of him.

"It'd be in your best interest," he states, going through the pamphlets before pulling one up, turning to reach into a filing cabinet for an envelope clearly stuffed with something. "It'd be in your best interest to take these. And to check your pockets," he states. The envelope is filled with money, paper bills that seem to shift colors in the light, and the pamphlet welcomes you to the current settings of this pocket dimension and tells you that while lodging is free, entertainment, food and other necessities are not so it's probably best that you find a job. And if you're polite, he'll give you a box of cookies that taste exactly like ones from home.

Inside your pockets are a set of keys and a map to a house. The house is yours. You'll even find a chest in your bedroom, containing six items from home, some of which you're sure shouldn't even fit in there.

    Welcome to Town.

Just ask anyone, Beachville is the most beautiful city anywhere! That's exactly what the NPCs will tell you with a genuine smile on their faces and a happy nod. It even just might be true. For a beach as crowded as it is, it's surprisingly clean! The sand is just right. Not too hot and soft to the touch. The water is so blue you can see marine life swimming just under the surface. A variety of multicolored fish. Dolphins. The occasional mermaid.

...yes, that was in fact a mermaid! They're playful, don't worry. They won't try to drown you, Maybe just knock you off your surfboard with a laugh and a flash of a shimmery tail as they swim off to who knows where.

There are still sharks in that very blue, very clear water, but they're not interested in you in the slightest. In fact, they seem very keen on avoiding you.

There's so much to do here in Beachville! There's fishing off the docks, well away from where people are swimming. There's a boardwalk with almost every shop imaginable. A tattoo artist, a piercing parlor, a place to buy silly souvenirs like hermit crabs in cages, or ridiculous shirts. There's so much food to be tried; Pizzas, Salt Water Taffy's, lemonades of various flavors and some of the best burgers and fries you've ever had!

If the day-life isn't for you, wait until dark. The amusement park (which opens at sunrise and runs until 2 AM), lights up the night in a fantastic and colorful display, the sounds of the roller coasters and laughing guests heard for miles around, and part of the docks turns into an open air nightclub, complete with dance floor, beverages for all and alcohol for anyone over eighteen. Don't try to trick the bartender. They'll know.

If the hustle and bustle and noise of the beach isn't for you, don't worry. There are many resorts nearby with their own private swimming pools and entertainment. There are coffee shops on almost every street, various boutiques and curios to look at and a movie theater or two.

Don't worry; you'll also find the more necessary stores like grocery stores (where there is something for almost everyone), pharmacies, book stores, clothing stores, hardware stores. There's even a police station, fire house and hospital.

But that's not what Beachville is about! Everyone needs a vacation, right?

Beachville Locations
(Feel Free to use our locations to spark ideas for prompts! Check out other fun locations Here!)

Beachville Boardwalk and Amusements

Just what it says on the tin. Every possible Boardwalk location you can think of is here. Tattoo parlors, really cheesy t-shirts and hideous beach attire, awesome food of highly dubious nutritious value. There are also rides, like a huge ferris wheel, bumper cars, spinning rides and a huge roller coaster. At night, part of the boardwalk closes and turns into a place for dancing, drinking (For anyone over eighteen) and watching fireworks every weekend until 2 AM.

The Surf Board

There are three of these places located along the beach, and each one seems to be run by surfers in 'business attire'. Of course, by business attire, we mean these shirts and khaki shorts. They're here for all your surfing needs whether it be board rentals, lessons or even board purchases and care products. Dude.

Shellfish Shack

A small, outdoor restaurant right beside the fishing docks that can happily boast the freshest, most inexpensive seafood. There are crabs, lobsters, shellfish of many edible varieties and other seafood, besides. They also sell fresh catches by the pound that you can cook yourself at home, so go ahead and buy some! And be sure to buy some of their fresh made lemonade by the gallon. It's known all over Beachville as the best.

Beach Breeze

The Perfect place outdoors to grab a smoothie or any kind of fruit juice. They also serve the best shaved ice you've ever had in your life. What a great way to beat the heat!

Bear in mind, however, that while things look bright an shiny and lovely, shops have a tendency to move overnight and change entirely. What was once beachville's finest seafood yesterday is, today, the finest in antiques and even though the owner looks like the right owner, he'll insist he's never sold seafood, nor does he like the stuff or know the first thing about it.

The sandwich shop you love is now a small advertising agency and the round and jovial owner is now rude and loud and doesn't remember your usual at all because he doesn't run a sandwich shop now quit wastin' his time!

And should your character notice there's no town dump, even though people generate garbage and there are garbage trucks, it'll be discovered upon following them that they seem to vanish all on their own with no trace whatsoever that they'd been there at all, save that there's less garbage in town.

Or maybe your character isn't for staying in such an odd place and they're going to try to leave. Good luck with that. You'll only get so far past the borders of Beachville before they're dumped right outside the information booth with Jerry the Booth Guy peering over his paper at them. Another attempt and maybe you won't get quite as far. You'll get to just within view of the 'Now Leaving Beachville' sign just at the edge of town before finding yourself once again outside of Jerry's booth. Keep trying. You'll get bored of it eventually.

You know how this works. You post with your character, two truths and one lie. People have to guess what the lie is. Do your best to make it tricky. If you already know what the persons lie is, don't say anything or give it away.

Enjoy! Make some friends. Question all you know about people! And remember: While all responses and conversations are meant to be in character? None of it is game canon or in game knowledge without players approval.

Have fun!
